Senior Salon days provide more than just haircuts at Lexington’s Minuteman Technical

LEXINGTON, Mass. —

It’s a self-care day for a number of older adults in the salon at Minuteman Technical High School in Lexington.

Hair is cut, washed, and styled by students eager to learn.

“I just love that we can make people feel beautiful not only on the outside but on the inside,” student Gabriella McDonnell said.

On Friday, a group arrived from Lincoln. The services are discounted thanks to a collaboration through the Lincoln Council on Aging.

Their smiles show it is more than just a trip to the salon.

“These services for seniors are so important, getting out of the house, your weekly appointment to get your hair done, the socialization, the ritual,” said Abigail Butt, of the Lincoln Council on Aging.

A few years ago, a salon and a barbershop in Lincoln closed. With a clear need, especially for seniors in the area, the partnership with Minuteman High School was born.

“It was a great collaboration. It’s fun. The students love working on the community, and the people are great,” said cosmetology instructor Cindy Demaio.

Once a month, the school hosts the Senior Salon. The service is so good that word is spreading.

“The response when I went back and met my other buddies in Lincoln was unbelievable,” said client Kavita Reddy, of Lincoln.

The Lincoln Council on Aging said an initial waitlist now has them booked up months in advance.

“Just seeing them back again and telling us how much they enjoyed it – at the end of the day, that’s all we want,” McDonnell said.
