Colleagues, We are pleased to share this this exciting effort by students in the Minuteman Tech Chapter 74 Environmental Program. Minuteman is one of only 259 schools in the USA and abroad participating in this research program. No other public school in Massachusetts is collecting this data for Oceanography Research. We thank Kathleen Bouchard Director of Career and Technical Education at Minuteman for bringing this to our attention. David |

"Minuteman Pteropods" Ocean Float Deployed to Support Student Oceanography Research
Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce the successful deployment of the Minuteman Pteropods ocean float as part of their Ch. 74 Environmental program, the Adopt-a-Float program organized by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC).
Launched on July 25, 2025, the Minuteman Pteropods float is now actively collecting critical biogeochemical data across the ocean. It is one of several autonomous floats deployed to measure key indicators of ocean health, including temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, nitrate, pH, and other chemical parameters that provide insight into the changing state of our global oceans.
This float continuously moves up and down the water column, collecting high-resolution data that will be made publicly available. Students will use this real-time data in the classroom to better understand how ocean chemistry changes with depth, across different water masses, and in response to rising global COâ‚‚ levels.
The program aims to inspire the next generation of oceanographers and climate scientists by connecting them directly to the science of ocean monitoring and climate change. Students and educators can track the Minuteman Pteropods float and analyze its data by visiting the official float data table:
