Whittier Technical’s Post-Secondary Student Rosemary Smith Wins Award

at 2024-25 MassCTE Awards

March 31, 2025

Rosemary Smith was recognized for her dedication, talent, and passion in the field of cosmetology as she received the MassCTE Post-Secondary Student Award. The award was presented at the annual MassCTE Awards Banquet, held at the Renaissance Patriot Place in Foxboro, where Smith was introduced by Whittier Tech’s Director of Community Partnerships, Tia Gerber.

“I am a believer that our path ultimately leads us to where we are meant to be,” Gerber stated in her introduction. “Rosemary Smith started at Whittier Tech as a high school welding student in September 2018 but decided shortly after that her passion for art was something she needed to follow, resulting in Rosemary transferring to the local traditional high school for their specialized art program. Here we are years later, and there is no student (possibly ever) who is more motivated in our 1000-Hour Cosmetology Evening Education program than Rosemary Smith.”

Smith’s dedication and work ethic were universally recognized by her instructors. When Whittier Tech’s evening education cosmetology instructors were asked who deserved the MassCTE Post-Secondary Student Award, both independently responded with one name: Rosemary Smith.

Instructor Jen Simard praised Smith’s commitment, saying, “As a vocational instructor, I always hope to have a student that stands out for their commitment and dedication to the cosmetology program. Rosemary Smith is exactly that student. Not only has she proved she can excel at any task that has been assigned to her, but she is also known for helping other students who need more guidance in the program.”

Instructor Tara McDonald echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Smith’s technical skills and professionalism. “Rosemary consistently impresses me – with her creativity, technical expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Whether mastering advanced techniques in hairstyling, perfecting intricate makeup applications, or delivering outstanding client service, Rosemary approaches every task with professionalism and a positive attitude.”

Beyond the classroom, Smith has established herself as a talented and innovative artist, particularly in the realm of creative makeup and face painting. Her skills were on full display during Whittier Tech’s annual Halloween contest, where students transformed their manikins with intricate designs. Smith’s entry was so masterfully executed that it was nearly impossible to believe it had started as a simple manikin head.

Smith’s passion for artistic expression extends into her community work as well. Every weekend during the season, she serves as the key face painter at the Haverhill Farmers Market, delighting children and families with her vibrant, detail-driven designs. “It brings me so much joy to show kids and other community members what is possible with makeup, face paint, and creative energy,” Smith shared. Her presence has become a cherished part of the Farmers Market experience, where thousands gather for fresh produce and local goods.

Additionally, Smith actively participates in the city’s Annual Art Walk, where she hosts a unique attraction called “Hoop Jam.” Using hula hoops she crafts herself from plumbing tubing and colorful duct tape, Smith creates an interactive experience that encourages people of all ages and abilities to engage in movement as a form of artistic expression. Positioned next to a live music vendor, her booth embodies the fusion of creativity and community engagement.

As a student and a leader, Smith has become known among her cosmetology peers as someone who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Her support for others, coupled with her artistic talent and unwavering drive, will undoubtedly carry her far in her future career in the salon industry.

With a bright future ahead, Rosemary Smith’s journey exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance. When accepting the award, Smith proudly shared that she would soon be a licensed cosmetologist, which happens to have been today, March 21, 2025. Congratulations, Rosemary!
