Blue Hills Regional Tech Students Get Hands-On Learning Building Additions
WESTWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students at Blue Hills Regional Tech are getting real-world experience by helping build additions throughout their community.
The program is for High School juniors, and they get to spend an entire school year on the job site. The students get a chance to practice what they’ve been working on in the classroom and the homeowners get a deal on construction for their additions. Leo Roitman is a student taking part in the program.
"I just think that it’s amazing that I have the opportunity to do this with a bunch of people I like," he said. "It doesn’t feel like school, I feel like I’m [getting] right to work."
Ron Eby runs the school’s student construction program and supervises all of the student’s work. He said it allows students to train their skills in the real world.
"We start from the foundation," he said. "When we show up there’s a foundation in place and we’ll take it as far as we can throughout the school year."
Students love the program because they get to see the impact of their work.
"That’s the best feeling about it," one student said. "Knowing that you built that and looking back and seeing I did that, and I had a huge part in making that."
The priority deadline to apply for students to work on homes next year is Jan. 15.
