TAUNTON — Superintendent Alex Magalhaes is excited to announce that Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School senior Dayna Mbugua has been selected to serve on Governor Maura Healy’s Youth Advisory Council.
Mbugua was sworn in at the Massachusetts State House on Monday, March 25 and immediately began serving on the Youth Advisory Council Executive Committee.
Mbugua is a student at the Community Health program at B-P. In her spare time, she has served as a Bible study teacher, held leadership positions in organizations such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), was the president of her school’s National Honor Society chapter, a member of the National Technical Honor Society, and former chapter president of SkillsUSA. Mbuga has also been a peer leader for Citizens4Citizens and Chairwoman of the Taunton Youth Commission.
Currently, she is spearheading a blood drive for Bristol-Plymouth’s National Honor Society, serves as the captain of the varsity girls’ basketball team and is a participant in varsity track and field.
Governor Healy signed Executive Order #617 in September to create the Governor’s Youth Advisory Council. The council is made up of 60 people ages 16-21 throughout Massachusetts. Throughout their two-year term, members advise the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and the administration on important issues affecting Massachusetts, including civic engagement, education, the environment, housing and youth violence.
“Every role and opportunity that I have has proudly never felt like work or another thing to add to my resume,” Mbugua said. “I truly love that I have the stature to make the change that I want to see in my school, community and state.”
While serving on the Executive Committee of the council, members will lead initiatives, listening sessions and working groups alongside other council applicants.
“This is a tremendous honor for a tremendous student who goes above and beyond in both her school and community,” said Superintendent Magalhaes. “We are so to have Dayna representing our school on the Governor’s Council and we know she will be an asset to their efforts and what they hope to accomplish.”
