SOUTH EASTON — Superintendent Holly McClanan and Principal Leslie Weckesser are pleased to share that Southeastern student Jateja Spriggs has been selected to serve on Governor Maura Healey’s Youth Advisory Council.

Spriggs was sworn in at the Massachusetts State House on Monday, March 25 and immediately began serving on the Youth Advisory Council Executive Committee. Her mother, brother and Legal and Protective Services Instructors Patricia Allen and Joshua Brewster accompanied her to witness her swearing-in ceremony.

Spriggs, a Brockton native, is a senior in the Legal and Protective Services Program at Southeastern. She plans to receive her associate’s degree from Massasoit Community College in tandem with her high school diploma in June. Spriggshas also been an active participant in Southeastern’s student council. In addition, she has served as an ambassador for Southeastern’s Open House, represented students from Brockton for two years on the School Council and has interned at the State House.

“We were quick to nominate Jateja to apply for this prestigious honor due to her involvement in several schoolwide initiatives to bring about change at Southeastern,” Superintendent McClanan said. “She embodies the type of leader we encourage in all of our Southeastern students.”

Governor Healey signed Executive Order #617 in September to create the Governor’s Youth Advisory Council. The council is made up of 60 people ages 16-21 throughout Massachusetts. Throughout their two-year term, members advise the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and the administration on important issues affecting Massachusetts, including civic engagement, education, the environment, housing and youth violence.

“We are so proud of her dedication to civic engagement and commitment to shaping the future,” Principal Weckesser said. “On behalf of the Southeastern community, we wish her congratulations!”

While serving on the Executive Committee of the council, members will lead initiatives, listening sessions and working groups alongside other council applicants.
