Superintendent Ben Lummis, Mayor Greg Verga, state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante and Jessica Margiotta from State Sen. Gloucester High School Students are . . . Proud of Career/Vocational Technical Education Experience

Every student in the Gloucester High School Career/Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) program received five shop-specific T-shirt uniforms thanks to the generosity of community partners.

A big crowd showed up outside the GHS Automotive Shop on Tuesday to acknowledge the more than 45 local businesses and community partners that contributed to the T-shirt uniform initiative.

The Gloucester Public Schools, Gloucester Education Foundation and Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce collaborated on the T-shirt uniform idea as a way to build off CVTE’s positive momentum by instilling even more student pride in the program.

Tim Sanborn of Cazeault Solar & Home was the driving force behind the project. He came up with the idea for the T-shirts while waiting to pick up his grandson – a student in the electrical shop at GHS – and seeing how students wore their sports team jackets with pride. Wouldn’t it be great if CVTE students had something along those lines, he thought.

Local businesses and community partners stepped up to the plate, donating thousands of dollars to make the T-shirt uniform donations possible.

Each shirt has the logo of the student’s respective shop on the front, with the names of community and industry partner sponsors on the back. CVTE student Victoria Mickels designed the automotive shop logo, and student Layce Frost drafted the carpentry logo design.

According to CVTE Director Brenda Waslick, shop-specific uniforms will emphasize a shared identity and purpose and help transition students as they prepare for their future careers where dress codes and personal protective equipment are required.

Several students spoke about their experiences in the CVTE program. Senior Jayden Toppan said he has learned a lot of life lessons as a result of his CVTE education. He noted that his twin brother Michael has applied his classroom knowledge towards excelling in the CVTE work study program.

Superintendent Ben Lummis, Mayor Greg Verga, state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante and Jessica Margiotta from State Sen. Bruce Tarr’s office presented ceremonial T-shirt uniforms to representatives from each of the four CVTE shops. Following the ceremony, teachers distributed the bulk of the T-shirt uniforms to the CVTE students.

Principal James Cook thanked the donors for their support, stressing that these financial contributions help students to realize their futures and reflect well upon the City of Gloucester.
