School Committee Chair Deborah P. Davis presents a certificate to senior Daniel Petrov, a Wakefield resident who was selected as National Merit Scholar Program Commended Student.

WAKEFIELD — Superintendent David DiBarri is pleased to announce that a Northeast Metro Tech senior has been named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholar program.

Daniel Petrov, a drafting and design student from Wakefield, earned the recognition of his exceptional academic promise with a high score on the Preliminary SAT exams that students took in the fall of 2022.

Petrov is currently ranked fourth in the Class of 2024 and is enrolled in three advanced placement courses — AP Physics, AP Literature and Composition and AP Psychology. He previously completed AP Statistics, AP U.S. History, AP Calculus and AP Biology as an underclassman.

Petrov is one of about 34,000 students nationwide who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which, along with Northeast Metro Tech, presented Petrov with a letter of commendation. Commended students do not go on to compete for the National Merit Scholarships, but commendation recognizes that they placed among the top 50,000 students nationwide who took the Preliminary SAT exam.

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. ”These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

“We are extremely proud of Daniil and are pleased to see his outstanding academic accomplishments recognized at the National level,” said Superintendent DiBarri.
