A Collaboration between a Chapter 74 Regional Vocational Tech and a Member Town

Colleagues,

MAVA Colleagues,

We are always pleased to share collaborative efforts between a Chapter 74 Regional Vocational Tech and a Member Town. Two seniors at Blue Hills Tech partnered with Dedham to fabricate a time capsule for the William B. Gould statue unveiling ceremony.

As stated by metal fabrication instructor Brian Gearty:

“The time capsule was a great project for Nathan and Paul to complete as it allowed them to exhibit the many skills they’ve learned throughout their time in our metal fabrication program,” Gearty said. “This project checked off several different strands of our curriculum framework all while allowing our students to work with the Town of Dedham. This project truly highlighted the collaboration our district has with its sending communities and the hands-on learning opportunities that are available to our students.”

CANTON — Superintendent-Director Jill Rossetti is pleased to share that Blue Hills Regional Technical School metal fabrication students created a time capsule for the William B. Gould statue unveiling ceremony.

Blue Hills metal fabrication seniors Paul McCann and Nathan Finn, under the direction of their instructor Brian Gearty, partnered with the Town of Dedham to create a time capsule that was placed inside the William B. Gould statue during an unveiling ceremony on Sunday, May 28. The statue was unveiled in honor of the 100th anniversary of Gould’s death and is expected to be opened in 2123.

McCann and Finn developed a blueprint for the capsule, followed by a procedural plan that allowed them to create the capsule in sequential order. The capsule was made out of stainless steel, which the students cut to size before one piece was bent to make the bottom and two other pieces were cut and bent to make the sides. The pieces were then welded together using gas tungsten arc welding. Lastly, the piece was sanded and given its final finish. The capsule took around two weeks for McCann and Finn to complete.

The time capsule will have a picture of McCann and Finn sealed in it alongside other mementos, including books, photos, goods from around the Town of Dedham, contributions from schools and letters from state representatives and senators, and more.

About William B. Gould

Gould was a formerly enslaved person and U.S. Navy veteran of the American Civil War. During his time in the Navy, Gould kept a diary which is one of only three known surviving diaries kept by enslaved people or formerly enslaved people during the Civil War.

After the war, Gould and his family settled in Dedham, where the statue and time capsule dedicated to him now stands.

Bolivian sculptor Pablo Eduardo created the William B. Gould statue for the Town of Dedham.
