Women and Non-traditional Employee Speaker Panel

Welcomed to Medford High & Vocational Technical High School

On Thursday, March 2, 2023, Medford High & Vocational Technical High School welcomed a guest speaker panel of six individuals from the Construction and Technology industries. The focus of the panel was on women and individuals who are non-traditional employees in their field. It was a great way to kick off Women’s History Month.

Students representing grades 9-12 from our Construction Cluster of Programs, (Electrical, Carpentry, Construction Craft Laborers, and Metal Fabrication) and our Technology Cluster of programs, (Engineering & Robotics and Programming & Web Development) participated in this event. Panelists shared stories about their personal career paths that led them to their current industry. One panelist entered the military after high school, others continued their education in college or gained on the job training, and one went straight into the IBEW Electrical Union after graduating from our own MVTHS Electrical program.

Students appreciated hearing about the different directions that led these individuals into their current careers. One of our senior Engineering students asked the panel what one piece of advice was given to them or would they give to students about entering these fields. One panelist stated, “You have to get comfortable being the only ‘you’ in the room; wherever you come from, female, different backgrounds…you are going to be the one changing the face of that industry. So get comfortable with being uncomfortable and educating other people in your life that you know what you are talking about.”
