TURNERS FALLS — Franklin County Technical School recently welcomed craftsman Andrew Cardin to speak to students about his journey to becoming an internationally recognized welder.

Cardin visited Franklin County Tech on Monday, Feb. 13, to meet with students and discuss his wide range of experience and successes during and after his time as a Career Technical Education (CTE) student.

“Andrew is a true success story born from hard work and determination. We are lucky to have him close by and appreciate him taking the time to visit our school, spend time, and pass along knowledge,” welding and metal fabrication teacher Lorin Burrows said. “He has competed against the best in the world and his visit is much like having the opportunity as a student-athlete to meet and learn from an Olympic athlete in their sport.”

Cardin is a graduate of Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton. He’s competed nationally and internationally. He’s won gold medals at district, state and national-level SkillsUSA events. He entered the 2015 WorldSkills championships in São Paulo, where he finished fifth in welding, receiving a Medallion of Excellence.

In competitions, Cardin has faced off against dedicated opponents, like his counterparts from South Korea who are exempted from military service and work 40-hour weeks to hone their craft ahead of competitions. More recently, Cardin has served as an advisor for WorldSkills competitions.

Cardin can be found sharing his knowledge of and passion for welding on YouTube and his Instagram feed. Students were excited to have the chance to interact with Cardin.

Cardin is now a welding supervisor for New England Utility Construction Inc. (Neuco).
